Mobile Medical Unit (MMU)
A CSR Initiative by REC Foundation in Partnership with Indian Red Cross Society – Tamil Nadu State Branch
The Indian Red Cross Society – Tamil Nadu State Branch (IRCS-TN), in collaboration with REC Foundation, has undertaken a significant healthcare initiative aimed at providing essential medical services to underserved and remote communities across Tamil Nadu. This program is part of REC Foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare in rural and semi-urban areas.
CSR Partnership & Expansion
Building on the success of the initial phase, the REC Foundation and Indian Red Cross Society – Tamil Nadu State Branch have extended their partnership to cover three additional districts — Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, and Theni.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for this new expansion phase was officially signed on 6th September 2025, marking another major milestone in extending free medical services and outreach programs to more communities in need.
Through this ongoing collaboration, IRCS-TN continues to uphold its humanitarian mission by organizing free medical camps, distributing essential medicines, and delivering healthcare access through Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). This partnership stands as a testament to how compassion, service, and corporate responsibility can work together to create lasting change in public health.
Project Scope & Reach
The Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) vehicles are currently operating successfully across seven districts in Tamil Nadu, delivering free medical care directly to communities that lack easy access to hospitals and clinics.
Each MMU is fully equipped to provide:
• General health check-ups
• First aid and emergency care
• Free distribution of essential medicines
• Health awareness and education programs
• Referral of patients to government hospitals for advanced care
Project Impact:
Monthly Reach per District: 1,400 – 2,500 beneficiaries
Total Monthly Reach Across 7 Districts: Over 16,000 beneficiaries
A large number of patients identified during MMU visits have been referred to government hospitals for continued treatment, ensuring proper follow-up and integration with the public health system. Many needy people have benefited greatly from this initiative — a wonderful and impactful project that continues to improve lives and promote community well-being.
Project Launch & Inauguration
The MMU Project was officially launched on 29th December 2024 in Tirunelveli District. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Dr. Justice M. Jayachandren, Chairman and Vice President of IRCS-TN, along with committee members Thiru Thomas V Jhon, Thiru P. Athmanathan, Thiru Karthick Thirunarayanan, Thiru K.S. Sankara Prasath, Thiru E. Om Prakash, and S.R. Krishnan, along with seven district officials and staff.
During the event, seven MMU vehicle keys were ceremoniously handed over to the respective district nodal officers by Justice Jayachandren, marking the operational rollout of the healthcare initiative.
Following this, a virtual inauguration was held on 2nd January 2025, presided over by the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu and President of the Indian Red Cross Society. The event, hosted from the Governor’s Office via Zoom, included active participation from all seven district officials and symbolized the state-level commitment to improving healthcare accessibility.
The virtual event was graced by esteemed guests from REC Foundation, including Mr. Narayanan Tirupathy, Independent Director and Chief Guest, Mrs. Thara Ramesh, Chief Program Manager, and Mr. Antony Immanuel, HR Representative. Their presence underscored the strength of this CSR partnership and the shared vision of delivering quality healthcare to every corner of Tamil Nadu.
The Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) Project continues to stand as a model CSR initiative, demonstrating how collaboration between humanitarian organizations and corporate partners can significantly enhance public health outcomes and bring medical services closer to those who need them most.
The Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch has achieved a significant milestone by signing MOA for procuring 7 Mobile Medical Units under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme thro’ REC Foundation, Gurugram, with a total value of Rs. 8.40 crores. These units will be deployed in the following districts:

2.Krishnagiri
3.Tirunelveli
4.Tuticorin
5.Nilgiris
6.Virudhunagar
7.Tenkasi
This accomplishment underscores the society’s dedication to expanding healthcare services and reaching underprivileged populations. The mobile units will be instrumental in providing essential medical care, conducting health outreach programs, and ensuring swift emergency responses, thereby greatly enhancing the health and well-being of communities across these districts.
